Strawberry Shortcake Lasagna
We all know and love the original dinner lasagna recipe, but what about a dessert lasagna recipe? Since a lasagna is basically just ingredients piled and layered on top of one another, you could do that with any ingredients whether they are sweet or savoury. In this dessert recipe from Delish, you'll learn how to make a strawberry shortcake dessert lasagna recipe that looks incredible. The great thing is, this recipe is super easy to make, and it's perfect for any occasion. Shortcake is a type of dessert recipe made using sweet cake or biscuits. The American style shortcake is made with a crumbly cake that is soft and fluffy. One of the first ever shortcake recipes was found in an English cookbook from 1588. Even William Shakespeare named one of the characters in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor Alice Shortcake. It's made with flour, baking powder or baking soda, sugar salt, butter, milk and sometimes eggs too. The most popular recipe made with shortcake is the strawberry shortcake which is what this dessert lasagna recipe is all about. It's made with sliced strawberries that have been coated in sugar. Then the cake is spread with whipped cream and then topped with the strawberries. It's actually served as a Christmas dessert in Japan.
There are also other fruit shortcake recipes like blueberry shortcake, peach shortcake, and raspberry shortcake. You could even make a chocolate shortcake. The older American shortcake recipes used pie crust cut into rounds. Then by 1850 strawberry shortcake became popular but was made using biscuits and fruit served with butter and sweetened cream. In the United States, June 14 has been deemed Strawberry Shortcake Day. This dessert lasagna recipe could be made with another type of fruit or chocolate mousse if you wanted something different. Just substitute the berries for chocolate mousse. Also, you could try making a healthier version of this dessert recipe by using coconut whipping cream instead of the dairy version, and you could make your own cake without eggs or butter in it. In this recipe they use heavy cream, so if you use the dairy cream make sure you always get organic cream from pasture-raised cows instead of factory farmed cows. Organic dairy products have fewer hormones and antibiotics in them, and they also have less of the chemicals that come from the feed the cows eat. Check your local grocery store and see what you can find, or look for local dairy farmers in your area.
You will also need some powdered sugar, vanilla extract, Nilla Wafers or a homemade shortcake recipe, and the strawberries. Always use fresh strawberries for this recipe since the frozen ones just won't do the recipe justice. First, wash and slice up your fresh strawberries. You can sprinkle some sweetener on them if you like, or just leave them as is. Then, in a bowl beat the cream using a hand-held mixer and add in the sugar and vanilla. Once the whipped cream is ready, you can start making the dessert lasagna in a 9 inch by 13-inch pan. At the bottom of the pan spread out some of the whipped cream and then put some of the cookies on top. Then add another layer of whipped cream on top of that and start to place the strawberries on top of that. Then repeat those steps for another layer or two and finish off the cake by sprinkling some of the wafers or cake on top. Put the cake in the fridge and chill it for at least 3 hours or overnight for best results.***
