This refreshing tropical jello salad is a great easy dessert recipe for any occasion. Dessert recipes like this one are great for those times that you don't have a lot of time or energy but you need to make a dessert, or you're craving something sweet. This dessert from Trish on Mom On Time Out has tropical flavours like orange, pineapple and coconut, perfect for a summer barbeque or for a taste of summer when you're in the midst of cold winter weather. This would be a great recipe to make for a potluck or a gathering where everyone needs to bring a dish to contribute to the meal. Potlucks are a great idea for bringing together people and for the host, it's a great idea since they won't have to make food for a huge crowd. Usually, with potlucks, each person brings a dish of their choice, or there is a theme for the recipes so that everything goes together. Sometimes guests will decide on what recipe they'll make ahead of time so that people can bring dishes that will compliment the others, or certain people are assigned certain dishes like a dessert recipe or a salad recipe. While no one is really sure of how potlucks started, they come from the word potlatch which in Native American language was used to describe a communal meal.

In the 16th century, the word potluck was mentioned in a book by Thomas Nashe, and it meant to give food to an unexpected guest. Then in the 1930s, during the Great Depression, the term was used to describe a dinner where everyone brought their own dish to share with everyone. The most common dishes to bring to a potluck include snack foods, salads and dessert recipes. They are usually pretty simple dishes or dishes with a lot of flavours made to satisfy everyone's taste buds. Easy dessert recipes including dessert salads like this recipe became popular in the 1940s and 1950s when more ready-made ingredients and canned items were available. It saved time, and it was an affordable solution and continues to be today. Dessert salads aren't really salads in the sense that they aren't necessarily healthy like you would expect a regular vegetable salad to be. They usually consist of dairy, sugar and sometimes even jello or marshmallows, which are yummy, but as all sugary foods should be eaten in moderation.
