Have you ever found your towels or clothing smelling like mould or mildew? It happens after a while when you're using and washing your towels, the fibres of the towel start to collect and build up a residue. The residue causes the towels to not dry out as well as they usually can, so they tend to start growing mildew or even mould on them which causes them to have this distinct odour. This can also cause your towels to have a matted appearance and texture too because to residue causes the fibres to stick together instead of fluffing out like they're supposed to. You can wash them again, using the fabric softener and laundry detergent to get the smells out, but this will unfortunately only cover them up. You need to remove the residue so that the towels can wash properly getting out all of the bacteria and feel fluffy and smell fresh. THere are some great cleaning tips you can try out that will help your towels look and smell great again, and you may already have it in your kitchen.

All you need is some vinegar, which is one of the most versatile natural cleaners out there. You can use it for cleaning your kitchen, bathroom and even your laundry machines, as well as your dishwasher. It actually works great on your towels too. The next time you smell your towels getting that mouldy or mildewy odour, just simply wash them in hot water with 1 cup of white vinegar. Put the vinegar in exactly how you would use laundry detergent and let it go through the cycle. You can opt to leave out the detergent, but you can also put it in if you'd rather cut the scent of the vinegar a bit. Then, simply put your towels in the dryer as usual and make sure that you dry them out thoroughly as any moisture can be a perfect environment for mould or mildew to grow. Also, when you're done using your towel, be sure to hang it up in a warm, dry area where it can dry out evenly so as not to attract more mildew. Wash your towels at least once every week or two as well to keep them smelling fresh and clean.

Another cleaning tip for keeping your laundry smelling fresh is to clean out your washing machine once in a while. Just like soap and fabric softeners can get trapped in the fibres of our towels and clothing, they can also get trapped in the machine. Clean your washing machine as much as needed. Once a month if you use it more or every few months if you use it less. Give your washing machine a good rinse and clean by running it through a full cycle with only vinegar added to the cycle, no soap or anything else. Run it on the hottest, longest cycle, so it really has a good chance to clean out all of the built-up soap residue and bacteria. The other cleaning tip is to clean the rubber seal around the door which is where a lot of water can become trapped and where mildew and mould can grow. Again, use some vinegar in a spray bottle this time to spray all over the inside of the rubber material on the door and leave it for 20 minutes. Then come back and wipe it clean with a cloth. Always leave the door open on your washing machine to let it air out to keep it nice and dry so mould and mildew can't grow.
