Elephant Ears is an Easy Recipe to Try

You most likely remember Elephant Ears from your childhood. If you don't, then you have to try them out. It turns out they're actually really easy to make at home, so you don't even have to go to the fair or festival to get one, you can just whip up a batch yourself at home. Elephant ears are one of those easy dessert recipes you can make when you're in the mood for something sweet and decadent, but you're not in the mood to get creative and decorative. They are somewhat like Churros in that they are simply fried dough, but they're also like doughnuts too. Instead of being formed into long sticks like churros or rings like doughnuts, they are made into abstract shapes that kind of resemble elephant's ears which is why they are called that. In Canada, they have elephant ears as well as beaver tails. Beaver tails were made around a campfire when there was no frying pan to fry the dough in and then in 1978, Pam and Grant Hooker of Ottawa, Ontario created the BeaverTails chain of restaurants. You can still get a famous beaver tail at any of their restaurants.

A common Italian variation of the dessert recipe is known as zeppole. In Croatia, their fried dough is known as languši, and then in Hungary, they have a fried dough known as lángos. In Austria, they have kiachl, in they have Germany Knieküchle and there is oliebol in the Netherlands. It's probably because the ingredients are simple, affordable and it's one of the easy dessert recipes anyone can make. All you need to make these yummy treats is some yeast, sugar, vegetable oil, flour, salt, cinnamon, butter, cinnamon & sugar mixture and oil for frying. You simply activate the yeast in water for 5 minutes and then stir in sugar, oil and flour with some salt and cinnamon. Then you mix all of the ingredients really well being sure not to over mix the dough, or it could turn out tough. The dough is sticky, but that's fine. You knead the dough for a few minutes and then put it in a bowl and let it rise for 40 minutes. When time is up, heat two inches of oil in a large pan. While the pan is heating separate the dough into 10 to 12 pieces and flatten them out making them nice and thin because they will puff up when they fry.

Next, fry the dough one piece at a time in the oil for about 2 ­to 3 minutes and flip once in between much like you would a pancake. Then, place on a plate you've prepared with some paper towel and allow some of the grease to drip off and while still hot brush on some butter and sprinkle on the cinnamon & sugar mixture. Serve them warm and eat them when they've cooled down enough but so that they are still nice and warm. It will be like warm bread right from the oven with less waiting time for the bread to bake. If you like dessert recipes like this, you may also like funnel cakes which are similar, but you can add various toppings to them. You can add toppings to your elephant ears too if you like, but most often, they're served plain with just sugar and cinnamon on them. Funnel cakes are made in more of a disk shape, but they are still a fried dough. They are then topped with fruit and sauces with whipped cream or icecream making for a very decadent treat.
